Shyness
A thousand virtues have been attributed to the Peony, widespread in Europe even in the wild, since ancient times: besides being used as a painkiller, it was said that a sprig tied to the neck of crazy people could cure them. Pliny the Elder talked about it as the plant of the god Paeon, the physician of gods, whom it is named after.
The ancient Greek myths reported that the god Paeon was transformed into a flower, a Peony, after freeing Leto from the pains of childbirth.
For Asian populations, especially China and Japan, the Peony was the flower of emperors, the only ones who could grow and pick it. In the language of flowers, it took the meaning of shame and shyness, to be given to a bashful beloved.
